Back-to-school is the perfect time to set up a home office. Retro looks, brilliant colours, wood or metal designs . . . Your desk lamp is a precious ally! Not only does it serve as a decorative piece, it’s also essential to creating good working conditions. It impacts your visual comfort and well-being. Here is our expert advice on finding the right light for your needs.
The right profile
To provide adequate lighting in your work area, choose an adjustable, directional light with swivelling arms and a tiltable shade. The perfect height? At least 40 cm to make sure the light covers the entire work surface. If you prefer a larger light, turn towards a floor lamp following the same criteria.
The perfect lighting
There are four types of light bulbs, each with their own characteristics. Choose the type that best suits your needs.
Incandescent light bulbs
The good old light bulbs that we’ve been using since way back when! These bulbs usually generate warm light and offer a lifespan of 1,000 hours. However, they will most probably be phased out as the manufacturing of certain models is now prohibited in Canada for energy conservation purposes.
Halogen light bulbs
These small bulbs, which generate white light and come in various formats, have revolutionized lighting design! Often used for work lamps or reading lights, they’re known to faithfully reproduce colours in their natural environment. They do, however, give off a lot of heat. The lifespan of halogen bulbs is approximately 2,000 hours.
Fluorescent light bulbs
Energy-saving light bulbs consume 4 to 6 times less energy than incandescent bulbs. Their higher cost is clearly outweighed by their lifespan of approximately 10,000 hours—10 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
Light-emitting diode (LED) lights
Despite their steep purchase price ($15 to $20), LED lights are undoubtedly the most wallet-friendly option due to their 50,000-hour lifespan, on average, lasting 10 to 20 years! LEDs render daylight lighting without shadows. What’s more, they’re very strong and don’t emit heat.
Criteria for making the right choice:
- Level of precision involved in your work
- Use or not of a computer
- Decorative purpose of the light
- Your budget
- Light-scattering efficiency
Did you know?
As you get older, less and less light reaches your eyes. Research shows that people that are 60 years of age need twice as much light as 30-year-olds to properly make out details.
