What exactly is a pendant?
A pendant is a luminaire mounted to the ceiling that hangs down on a rod, cable or chain. Unlike a flush ceiling fixture, a hanging light creates a visual anchor and directs illumination downward. That's what makes pendant lighting both decorative and functional, and why designers reach for it in nearly every room.
Choosing your pendant light by room
Kitchen and island
Over an island, hang the bottom of the fixture about 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) above the counter for precise task lighting without blocking sightlines. Leave at least 24 in (61 cm) between each pendant when you line up several. For a long island, a linear suspension unifies the space with a single piece; for a shorter one, two or three mini pendants create a pleasing rhythm.
Dining room
With a standard 8 ft (2.4 m) ceiling, set the bottom of the pendant 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) above the table. That builds intimacy without obstructing views. An oversized fixture needs room to breathe; a handy rule keeps the fixture about 12 in (30 cm) narrower than the table on each side.
Living room and bedroom
In an open-plan living room, a pendant helps define zones and adds layered light. In the bedroom, a hanging light on each side of the bed frees up nightstands while creating a deliberate design moment. Keep at least 7 ft (2.1 m) of clearance under the fixture in walkways.

Bulbs, colour temperature and dimming
For task lighting over a counter, aim for the equivalent of 75 to 100 W; for soft ambiance, 40 to 60 W is plenty. A 10 W LED easily replaces a 60 W incandescent. For mood, a colour temperature of 2700 to 3000 K gives warm, welcoming light, and a high CRI (90+) renders colours more accurately. Many integrated-LED models are dimmer compatible; always confirm the fixture and bulb are marked dimmable before installing a dimmer.
