Choosing a work lamp by task
A desk lamp isn't just there to dress up a corner of the table. Its primary job is task lighting: aiming a precise beam onto the work surface so you can read, write, draw or face a screen without squinting. Before you consider style, ask yourself what you'll be doing under the lamp most of the time.
- Computer work: favour indirect or softened light that won't reflect off your screen;
- Reading and study: a reading lamp with a crisp, adjustable beam cuts eye strain;
- Drawing, sewing, model-making: choose higher output and good colour rendering (high CRI);
- Reading nook or bedside: warm, enveloping light does the job better than a harsh spotlight.
Height, reach and positioning
A well-proportioned desk lamp usually stands 15 to 20 in (38 to 51 cm) tall: enough to light the whole work surface without the bulb landing in your line of sight. Place it on the side opposite your writing hand — to the left for a right-hander — so your wrist doesn't cast a shadow on the page.
Articulated models change everything: an adjustable arm and swivelling head let you bring the light close to a document or raise it to spread wider. That's the real strength of the adjustable desk lamp, found at Artemide and Dainolite alike, where the motion feels as precise as it is natural.
Colour temperature and visual comfort
Warm light of 2700 to 3000 K creates a relaxed mood, perfect for an accent lamp in a living room or for reading at night. For daytime focus, a more neutral tone keeps the mind alert. A good colour rendering index (CRI 80 and up) shows hues faithfully — essential if you work with materials, fabrics or colour.
The advantage of LED desk lamps
An LED work lamp draws little power — often 5 to 10 W for light equal to older bulbs — barely heats up and lasts tens of thousands of hours. Many models build the source right in, with dimming and sometimes a USB port to charge a device while you work. It's the logical choice for a station used every day.
Styles and brands in our collection
Dainolite anchors the collection with versatile work lamps, from classic to contemporary. Artemide brings Italian craft and iconic geometry, while Pablo Designs leans on clean lines and clever mechanisms. Alongside them, Adesso, Creation Nova, Luce Lumen and Louis Poulsen widen the field, from minimalist grey office lamp to sculptural fixture. A few wall spotlights round out the range for those who'd rather keep the work surface clear.
Whether you're furnishing a first apartment, a home library or a permanent work-from-home station, there's a lamp here that suits your décor as much as your routine — from a table lamp set on a writing desk to a floor lamp lighting a nearby reading chair.
