What is an outdoor pendant?
An outdoor pendant hangs from the ceiling on a rod, chain or cord, unlike an outdoor wall light that mounts to the wall. It installs under a sheltered ceiling: porch, veranda, soffit or gazebo roof. Its main job is general lighting for the area, but the shade shape, metal finish and glass type also make it a decorative piece in its own right.
In our collection, open lantern-style cages lead the way, alongside glass globes, cylindrical forms and a few woven rattan models for covered spaces. Z-Lite supplies the largest share of pieces, with a range of black, bronze and steel finishes. Visual Comfort Studio brings dressier lines, while Artemide and Marset lean toward pared-down design.
How high should an outdoor pendant hang?
Over a walkway or pathway, leave about 7 ft (2.1 m) between the floor and the bottom of the fixture so you can pass without ducking. Over a patio table or outdoor dining spot, aim for 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade. If the porch ceiling is very tall, you can drop the piece a little and pick a larger size to fill the vertical space.
Choosing the right size for your space
To scale an outdoor pendant over a table, a handy rule: the shade diameter should be roughly one-third the width of the table. Over a long rectangular table, a linear outdoor chandelier or a multi-light outdoor chandelier spreads light more evenly than a single pendant. For a small covered entry, a mini pendant keeps the look from feeling crowded.
Rating and materials that last
Under a covered ceiling that still sees moisture and blowing rain, look for a fixture rated for wet or damp locations with a high ingress rating. Corrosion-resistant finishes — powder-coated aluminum, coated steel, brass — hold up better through Quebec winters. Glass and metal clean easily and don't trap water, unlike fabric shades you should avoid outdoors.
Rattan and fibers for sheltered spots
A woven rattan fixture adds warm texture under a veranda or a well-covered pergola. These fibers need a spot protected from direct rain, though: keep them to sheltered ceilings, and save glass-and-metal cages for more exposed locations.
Color temperature and bulbs
For a welcoming evening mood, stay in the warm white 2700 to 3000 K range, which flatters wood, stone and greenery. A color rendering index (CRI) of 90 or higher shows truer colors. Choose dimmable models with an outdoor-rated dimmer: then you can tune the level whether you're hosting at the table or just want a soft glow on the porch.
Solar and other outdoor options
Some patios without wiring suit a solar outdoor pendant that hangs with no electrician needed. For a permanent install, a hardwired outdoor pendant light stays more reliable and brighter. And remember the pendant often works with other fixtures: an outdoor flush mount for low soffits, an outdoor wall light on each side of the door, or a post light out in the yard.
