Flush mount or semi flush mount: which one?
A true flush mount sits tight against the ceiling, with no gap between the base and the surface. It's the go-to when the ceiling is low — 8 ft (2.4 m) or under — or in traffic areas where you don't want anything hanging down. A semi flush mount drops a few inches on a stem, letting light wash up toward the ceiling for a dressier look. On a 9 ft (2.7 m) ceiling or higher, that slight drop adds character without crowding the room.
Where to install a ceiling mounted light around the home
- Kitchen: a ceiling light spreads steady general lighting over counters and the island without casting harsh shadows.
- Hallway and entry: a compact ceiling flush mount marks the way and fits even under a low ceiling.
- Bedroom: a soft led ceiling light in 2700 K sets a restful mood before sleep.
- Bathroom: choose a damp-rated fixture above the sink and a wet-rated one near the shower.
- Living room: a large ceiling mounted fixture or a chandelier becomes the centrepiece and anchors the ambient light.
Shapes and styles available
The collection spans round and domed silhouettes that spread light gently, along with square, rectangular and drum shapes with crisper lines. Style-wise, you'll find the contemporary minimalism of Kuzco Lighting and Matteo Lighting, the more traditional finishes of Z-Lite and Canarm, and the refined pieces from Visual Comfort Studio, Dainolite and Alora Lighting. For clean architectural interiors, Artemide offers bold geometry.
The integrated LED ceiling light
An integrated led ceiling light delivers long life and low energy use, which makes it ideal for high-use rooms. Many models offer adjustable colour temperature, handy for shifting from a warm glow in the evening to a crisper white during the day. Some ceiling lights are also dimmer-compatible for full control over intensity.
Sizing your ceiling mounted fixture
A simple rule: add the room's length and width in feet, then convert that total to inches for a balanced diameter. A 10 x 12 ft (3 x 3.7 m) room pairs well with a fixture around 22 in (56 cm). Under 100 sq ft (9.3 m²), keep it below 20 in (51 cm) to hold the right proportions.
What about outdoors?
An outdoor ceiling mounted light must be weather-rated: look for a damp or wet rating for a porch or covered entry. You'll find these in our dedicated outdoor lighting collections.
A tip for large volumes
In a high-ceilinged living room, a pendant light or chandelier can complement the flush mount by adding a focal point, while a wall sconce layers light around the space.
