Choosing a floor reading lamp by use
A reading lamp doesn't light a room the way an ambient fixture does: it aims a precise beam onto the page, at eye level, so no shadow falls across the text. That's why most models in this collection have an adjustable head or a swing arm you can reposition in one move. Before buying, pin down the exact spot: beside an armchair, in a reading nook, or next to the bed for reading in bed.
For the living room
In a living room, a floor lamp for reading placed behind or beside the chair keeps the beam out of your line of sight while lighting the book. The adjustable heads on Dainolite and Artemide models tilt to frame the reading zone precisely, while the more sculptural lines of Luce Lumen or Marset play a decorative role even when switched off.
For the bedroom and reading in bed
At the bedside, a reading floor lamp should light your side without waking your partner. Pick a narrow, well-aimed head, ideally with dimming, and a warm colour temperature of 2700 to 3000 K that won't overstimulate before sleep. A swing-arm model reaches over the nightstand without cluttering the surface.
For the office and task work
If the surface is small, a desk lamp will do; but for a work chair with no nearby table, an adjustable standing reading lamp frees up space while delivering bright task light. Aim for high colour rendering (CRI 90 and up) to distinguish shades and details — useful for reading and for fine work alike.
Height, reach and colour temperature
A typical floor lamp stands about 58 to 64 in (147 to 163 cm) tall. For reading, what matters is that the bottom of the shade or the head sits roughly at shoulder height when you're seated: the light then lands on the page without glaring in your eyes. An adjustable head lets you fine-tune that reach to suit your chair.
- Colour temperature: 2700-3000 K for a restful warm white, the best balance for long reading sessions.
- Colour rendering: CRI 90+ for crisp text and true-to-life colours.
- Seated height: aim for a head at shoulder level when seated, generally 40 to 48 in (102 to 122 cm) off the floor.
- Beam: directed and focused for reading, softer if you also want ambient light.
LED, dimming and rechargeable models
An LED floor and reading lamp draws little power, barely warms up and lasts for years with no bulb changes; it's now the standard for a floor reading lamp. Several Artemide and Pablo Designs models build the LED source right in, often with smooth dimming to match the intensity to the time of day. For a chair you move around or cordless reading nearby, a rechargeable model offers the same freedom as a portable lamp, with no cord to manage.
Styles and materials
A modern floor reading lamp stands out even when off. Black or brass metal finishes bring a modern or lightly industrial character, while glass and understated bases lighten the visual weight. Dainolite offers clean, versatile lines, Louis Poulsen and Marset carry a recognizable Scandinavian and Mediterranean signature, and Sonneman and Tech Lighting lean into minimalist contemporary design.
