What is a linear suspension?
A linear suspension is an elongated, bar-style fixture hung from the ceiling by cables or rods. Unlike a round or square chandelier, it concentrates light over a narrow band — ideal above a surface that is itself long and slim. You'll also hear it called a linear suspension light or a linear pendant. The light drops straight onto the surface, which makes it excellent task lighting for cooking or reading.
Linear lighting in the kitchen and over the island
It's above the island that the linear pendant light truly shines. A single bar covers the whole length of the counter, where you'd otherwise need two or three separate pendants to do the same job. Center it over the island at a height that lights the surface without glaring into the eyes of anyone seated. For a bar or lunch counter the principle is the same: a good kitchen island light bar runs roughly one-half to two-thirds the length of the island.
Dining room, living room and beyond
Over the dining table, a linear suspension draws a clean line that anchors the room. In a living room or hallway it becomes a statement piece, almost sculptural. You'll also find these fixtures in commercial projects, conference rooms and open-plan spaces. Even in a bedroom a restrained model can replace a traditional pendant light and give warm, enveloping light. Our modern linear ranges suit almost any room with the length to carry them.

Installation height and mounting tips
Before buying, measure your ceiling height and the surface you plan to light. Above a table or island, aim for roughly 30 to 36 in (76 to 91 cm) between the top of the surface and the bottom of the fixture, adjusting for the height of the occupants and the ceiling. Long-cord models are easy to set at the right drop; use a laser level to center and align the bar perfectly, especially in a long space. A shorter pendant suits low ceilings, while a high ceiling can carry a more generous drop.
LED, color temperature and rendering
Most of our linear suspension lights use integrated LED, which pairs energy efficiency with a long lifespan. For the home, a color temperature of 2700 to 3000 K gives warm white light that feels welcoming at the table and in the kitchen. A high color rendering index (CRI) shows the true colors of food and materials. Many models are dimmable: pair one with a compatible dimmer to adjust intensity through the day.
