Take precise measurements to install a pendant light

To install a pendant light and obtain adequate lighting, you need to know how to install it in the right place and at the right height. Similarly, it is important to leave enough space between each recessed light. To do this, you must take into account the intensity of the bulbs as well as the distance between the light source and the areas of the house to be lit. Get out your tape measures, because you will have to take very precise measurements!

Calculation from the floor

You may be surprised to learn that measurements should be taken from the floor, not the ceiling. This rule applies whether your light fixture is above a dining table or an island. Thus, to install a pendant light, the height of your ceiling does not affect the positioning of your fixture, which should be between 60 and 66 inches from the floor. This corresponds to the distance between the floor and the bottom of your light fixture. You can also choose to calculate the distance between your countertop and the lowest point of your suspended piece. In this case, make sure to maintain a gap of 30 to 36 inches.

Clearance space

You can also imagine that there must be sufficient space to allow circulation. Therefore, allow a clearance of 6 feet and 9 inches if the ceiling has a standard height of 8 feet. This corresponds to the distance between the floor and the bottom of your light fixture. In addition, to respect this clearance, you will have to opt for a light fixture with a maximum height of 15 inches.

Installing a pendant light: size for the dining room

Your light fixture not only serves to illuminate the room but also to decorate it. It must, therefore, respect a certain proportion with respect to the table. Consequently, choose a light fixture that will be 12 inches smaller than the shortest side of your table. If your table measures 30 inches by 54 inches, your chandelier should have a diameter of 18 inches.

Installation of recessed lights

The location of your recessed lights will vary depending on their function. If they are to be used to illuminate wall art or create an ambiance, you should install them 9 inches from the wall. It would then be preferable to install a dimmer switch; you will be better able to obtain the desired lighting according to the moment. In this case, however, orient your purchase of recessed lights and bulbs accordingly. On the other hand, if your recessed lights will serve as the main source of light in the room, you should install them at an interval of 36 to 48 inches. However, do not exceed this distance, as you would risk creating shadow areas. Also note that the height of the ceilings will determine the distance of your first frames from the wall. In the case of 8-foot ceilings, they should be 18 or 24 inches from the wall. You will also have to take into account obstacles and full-height furniture. For example, install your recessed lights about 6 inches from cabinet doors, in front of kitchen cabinets. You can have your light fixtures and recessed lights installed by your usual supplier, who will know how to respect the rules of the trade and the building code.
